The client is a US-based, AI-powered sales enablement platform that empowers companies around the world to enhance the effectiveness of their sales teams. As part of its global expansion, the client established operations in India, with a growing team that supports its wider international objectives.

 

The challenge

As the client expanded into India, the company recognised the need to equip its Indian team with a deeper understanding of US business culture to ensure smoother collaboration with American colleagues. Several challenges were identified:

1. Cross-Cultural Communication

Differences in communication style, including tone, directness, and email etiquette, led to misunderstandings.

2. Leadership Expectations

Varying expectations around leadership styles and decision-making created misalignment in team dynamics.

3. Accountability and Initiative

Approaches to individual ownership, deadlines, and proactiveness varied between teams in India and the US.

4. Feedback and Conflict

The contrast between direct feedback styles in the US and more indirect approaches in India led to confusion and reduced clarity.

What we did

Global Business Culture designed and delivered two virtual US cultural awareness workshops, each 1.5 hours in length, for up to 80 employees in India and 20 employees in the US. The sessions were interactive and focused on building foundational US business culture knowledge.

Phase 1: Cultural Foundations

  • Introduction to culture and its visible and invisible elements
  • Understanding how culture influences communication and behaviour in a global business context

Phase 2: Understanding Indian/US Business Culture

  • Overview of American values such as individualism, informality, directness, and time orientation (for Indian colleagues)
  • Overview of Indian values such as hierarchy, collective decision-making, relationship-focused interactions, indirect communication styles, and flexible time orientation (for US colleagues)
  • Exploration of key business behaviours: leadership, communication, feedback, conflict resolution, and accountability

Phase 3: Practical Applications

  • Instructor-led best practices for working with Indian/US colleagues
  • Culturally sensitive communication and collaboration strategies
  • Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Phase 4: Takeaways and Next Steps

  • Summary of key learnings and recommended action points for participants
  • Q&A session to clarify specific cultural concerns and support real-world application

 

 

The results

Through the two-phase virtual workshop series, participants achieved:

  • 100 employees across India and the US gained foundational understanding of how cultural differences impact daily business interactions and team dynamics
  • Teams developed practical strategies for navigating differences in directness, email etiquette, and feedback styles between US and Indian business cultures
  • Participants learned culturally sensitive approaches to leadership, decision-making, and conflict resolution that reduced misunderstandings and improved working relationships
  • Teams received actionable best practices and strategies to avoid common cultural pitfalls, with clear takeaways for immediate application in their daily work
