Slavery is not a thing of the past – it is alive and well and possibly to be found within your global supply chain. The Modern Slavery Act highlights the need to do something to combat this growing problem but does very little to suggest how companies might actively engage in the fight.
We all need to move on from making the mandatory statement on our websites towards making tangible statements of intent that we are committed to eradicating slavery from every facet of business. Companies need to start to equip their employees with the skills and knowledge to really make a difference.
One of the problems associated with tackling Modern Slavery is that the signs are often not obvious. No supplier will admit to bad practice in a supplier engagement questionnaire and will also make every attempt to hide any obvious manifestations of malpractice – especially when they know a key customer is about to arrive.
People really do want to do something to make a difference, but they simply don’t know what to do. They don’t understand the difference between local conditions and slavery, they aren’t sure what to look for and if they do spot anything suspicious don’t know how to go about reporting their suspicions.
